This doublet, also called a gambeson or aketon, was worn under chain mail and plate armor in the late Middle Ages and is virtually indispensable in free and show fighting. The padded garment increases the wearing comfort of armor and also cushions opponent blows.
The doublet consists of three layers of fabric: an outer layer of 330gsm cotton canvas, a filling of polyester and an inner lining of cotton. Vertical stitching keeps the filling in place. The doublet closes with internal ribbons, so that the closure is not noticeable. Openings at sleeve hem and side seam increase wearing comfort. This doublet can also be worn as a winter coat.
This doublet forms the supporting base under chain mail or plate armor during re-enactment and show fighting, and is also suitable as a protective layer during HEMA-training.
