Viking disc fibula Vårby, silvered bronze

Product description

This disc fibula is based on a find from Vårby in Sweden, dating from the 9th century. The center is dominated by a cross; since Sweden was still largely pagan at the time, it is possible that the four heads at the ends rather symbolize the four cardinal directions mentioned in the Germanic Edda: Nordri, Sudri, Austri and Vestri.

Executed in silvered bronze. The historical original was of considerable size and robustly made; our representation is greatly reduced to a diameter of 3.2 cm, suitable for closing the neckline of a tunic or dress.

The Vårby hoard was found in 1871 beneath a stone in the forest near Huddinge and weighed a total of 1.4 kg, largely gilded silver. A fine addition to your equipment for Viking Age re-enactment.
