This pendant is a detailed replica of a Viking Age snake amulet found in Gørding, Denmark. The original was made of solid gold, made in a refined granulation technique, possibly depicts an asp and dates from the late Viking Age, around the year 1000.

The snake had great symbolic meaning in Viking mythology: on the one hand it stood for life, renewal and rejuvenation, on the other hand for death, poison and destruction. A snake amulet was supposed to give the wearer strength, health and long life. A detector discovery in 2019 revealed the original — a thin gold plate with traces of wear, suggesting it was once worn as a pendant, believed to have been crafted in the royal workshops of Jelling.
