What is snow cleaning?
Snow cleaning is a natural way to freshen up a sheepskin without water or cleaning products. Fresh snow helps remove dust and light odors from the wool, while the fleece itself stays dry.
This method has been used for centuries in cold areas and is suitable as maintenance, not as a replacement for a proper wash.
When is snow cleaning suitable?
Snow cleaning only works under the right conditions.
Suitable when:
Dry, fresh snow
Light to moderate frost (approximately –2 to –8 °C)
A sheepskin that mainly needs to be freshened up
Not suitable when:
Wet or sticky snow
Thawing or temperatures around freezing point
Heavily soiled or wet fleeces
Step-by-step snow cleaning
Step 1 – Lay the fleece in the snow
Place the sheepskin with the wool facing down on clean snow
Press the fleece lightly, don't rub or roll it
Leave the fleece for 15 to maximum 30 minutes
Leaving it longer isn't necessary and increases the chance that the fleece will absorb moisture.
Step 2 – Air dry outside
Gently tap out the fleece
Hang it outside in a dry, sheltered spot
Avoid direct sunlight
Let the fleece hang for 1 to 3 hours, until it feels dry and fresh
Step 3 – Dry indoors
Bring the fleece inside
Let it dry gently at room temperature
Don't place the fleece near a heater
The next day you can gently fluff up the wool
What you should not do
To prevent damage to the fleece, it's important to avoid these actions:
Getting the fleece wet
Leaving the fleece until the snow melts
Brushing while the wool is cold or damp
Placing the fleece on or against a radiator
Heat and moisture can harden the skin and damage the wool.
How often can you use snow cleaning?
Snow cleaning is meant as a freshening treatment, not a deep clean.
Maximum 1 to 2 times per winter
Only when conditions are suitable
Don't use as standard maintenance
For thorough cleaning or stubborn stains, a different method is needed.
Summary
Snow cleaning is a simple and natural way to keep a sheepskin fresh during winter. When done correctly, it helps remove dust and odors without putting strain on the fleece.
Use this method consciously, sparingly, and only in the right weather conditions.
