Viking swords were derived from the German types of spathae, swords from the Iron Age. They were quite long, had a solid protection and a strong blade. It is presumed he original of this Viking sword had a double cutting edge. Presumably it was derived from the Celtic and Roman cavalry swords. The sword would not only have served as a sword for battle, but also to directly reveal the status of the wearer. When the Roman Empire collapsed the Germanic and Frankish aristocracy adopted the designs of the Iron Age sword the spatha. Swords were decorated less and the cross-guard became wider. However the pommel continued to be decorated, swords around this period were not made for balance and that offered the artist the possibility to apply various decorations on the pommel.

This sword is based on several finds from Great Britain and Scandinavia. The blade is made of EN45 steel with 0,55% carbon, 1,75% silicon, 0,75% manganese, 0,05% sulphur and 0,05% phosphorus. It has a Scale of Rockwell hardness of 50 HRC and is popular as a battle sword in the re-enactment world. The sword is made in Scotland. The blade has a length of 79 cm, a width of 5 cm and the tip is 2,5 cm.

This sword is a Petersen type S.
