This chain end is based on a 10th century original excavated in the Viking hoard in Mandermark in Denmark. The original is nowadays part of the collection of the National Museum of Denmark in Copenhagen. In the Early Middle Ages, items like this were used as ends for necklace chains, chains consisting of several strands and as ends for bracelets and torques.
