The blade is made of 'damascus steel'. The original method of making damascus steel from carbon steel has been lost in the modern era. Today, the term Damascus steel or damask steel is used as a general term for pattern welded or molten steel, consisting of two or more steel types. In the Viking era and in the Middle Ages, damask steel knives were bought from merchants, these knives came from the far east. Damask steel was known for its beauty, quality and strength.
