In the Roman culture, the palm symbolized the victor. Gladiators were awarded with a golden palm after a great victory. The Greek goddess of victory, Nike, and the Roman goddess Victoria, are often depicted with wings. On their head they wear a crown made of palms.
Palms were later used in the Roman period in association with Cristianity. The palm is depicted on several Roman-Christian tombs.
