Late Roman ampoule, St Menas

10(product tekst/content)

This ampoule is based on a 6th-7th century original of Saint Ménas. An original is now part of Musée de Louvre in Paris. The saint is shown kneeling between two crosses and two camels. This early Christian Ampoule was used to take water or oil from a holy place. Often these bottles were taken away as a souvenir when someone had gone on a pilgrimage. This ampoule was used in the latter days of the Roman Empire and by converted Germanic tribes.
