Hosokawa Katsumoto (1430-1473) was a governor of Shogun in the 15th century and a key figure in the Japanese Onin war. With more than 80,000 men he fought in the former capital of Kyō'to againsthis father Yamana Sozen. After 10 years of war Kyō'to was destroyed and neither side could claimvictory.
This katana is hand-forged in the Hon-Sanmei style and the blade has 3 different hardnesses. The cutting edge (hasaki) is made of hardened 1095 carbon steel, the edges of medium-hard 1065 carbon steel and the core of softer, low-carbon steel.The hardness differs from HRC 60 in the cutting edge to HRC 40 in the back of the blade. These differences in the hardness are visible in the well-crafted blade pattern (hamon) line.
This katana has a length of 109,5 cm with a blade of 77 cm and a grip (tsuka) of 32 cm. It weighs 1200 g. The grip wrapping is made of black silk in the Katate-Maki style underlaid with genuine shagreen, this style is typical for battle. It also has a black high polish lacquered scabbard (saya) in the Kuroro style with closings (kojiri, kurigata, koiguchi) made of buffalo horn. It has a long tang (nakago) that is fixated in the grip with two bamboo pins (mekugi). The katana is delivered including a striking collector`s box.
