Product description

King Richard I of England, better known as Richard Lionheart, was the son of Henry II and reigned between 1189 and 1199. Together with king Philip II of France, Richard went on a crusade to the Holy Land. Here he fought against Saladin. Richard conquered Cyprus. Later on he conquered Acre and attempted to reconquer Jerusalem from the Muslims. Richard went into history as a crusader.

During his return to England Richard was taken prisoner. In 1194 he was freed in return for an enormous sum of money that nearly bankrupted England. Back in England he immediately started a war against his former ally Philip II. Richard was killed during the siege of a French castle. His successor was King John.

This coin is a replica of originals that were minted during the reign of king Richard I of England. It is made of leadless pewter.
