Product description

Hoplites were the heavily armed infantrymen in the ancient Greek army. His most important weapon was his lance (dory) and the most important means of defense was the large round shield (aspis). The xiphos, or sword, was a secondary weapon that hoplites carried on the left side. The xiphos is a relatively short sword (blade was on average 45-60 cm long) with a leaf-shaped blade. They were mainly used if the spear was broken, or in close combat, for thrusting and cutting. The early xiphos was made of bronze, and the later variants of iron. Few originals have been found, they are best known for images on Greek vases and sculptures.

This xiphos is not an exact replica of an original, but is based on excavated remains of various originals and on images in Greek art. The leaf-shaped blade is typical dor xiphoi from the 6th and 5th centuries BC. The blade is made of EN45 steel with a wooden hilt. The grip is riveted on the tang. This xiphos is delivered including a beautiful luxurious red leather scabbard with a wooden core. The top and bottom of the scabbard are made entirely of wood. The scabbard is further decorated with leather laces and has brass rings to wear it on your belt. This sword is a real asset for collectors of classical weapons and re-enactors of Greek antiquity.

Prevent rust and corrosion by oiling your weapons regularly. Remove rust easily with black sandpaper. Remove burrs with a whetstone. Make sure you have removed all burrs before using a battle-ready weapon, as they can cause wounds.

Maintenance & care
Just as with weaponry, you can care for your shoes and leatherware by applying a little Ballistol after cleaning. This prevents the leather from drying out.

Tip: How to adjust the finish of your armour and weaponry
Luxurious (polished)- polish the steel with metal polish or toothpaste. You can even give the item a mirror-like polish. Test on a small surface first!
Handmade (matte)- soak the steel in cola for 40 minutes to 20 hours. Check regularly and treat with black sandpaper.
Antique (patinated) leave the steel to rust for some time in a damp environment, preferably outside. Remove the red layer of rust, to reveal the corroded top layer.

Please note. After finishing the product yourself, the warranty and return right expire. Celtic WebMerchant is not responsible for the obtained result."
