This jewel is based on one of the world"s oldest known chess sets excavated on the Isle of Lewis at the Scottish West Coast. The chess set dates from the 12th century and is presumably made in Norway. The chess pieces show distinctive Scandinavian Viking influences, like knot patterns etc. Around the 12th century there was a lively trade and interchange between Scandinavia and the Scottish isles (and Man and Ireland). The Scots from these regions would later be known as Gall Gael (foreign Gaelic people), which refers to a mix of Norse and Insular Celtic descent.
