In Ancient Egypt, the cat was perceived as a holy creature. Egypt was the granary of Europe and cats protected the enormous amounts of grain that were stored. This is why Ancient Egypts owed its wealth to cats. Cats protected the granaries from rats, birds and mice. Because they did this for thousands of years, their modern offspring still hunts these animals today. The cat was honored in beautiful depictions and was mummified after its death. This jewel is made of gilded leadless pewter.
