Dioscorides wrote in 40-90 AD that the flowers of the Delphinium resemble small dolphins, hence its name. Delphinium was often used as a herb in several medicines in Antiquity. Delphinium can become 2 metres long! Delphinium has an attractive smell so the Romans, who grew the plant in their own gardens, often placed it at the lararium (house altar). Besides, the Delphinium can be woven into a garland or laurel.
