The basket hilted broadsword was mainly used by the Scots between 1689 and 1746. Sometimes they are also called basket hilted claymores because the blade was often made of a broken claymore blade. The grip has a large basket that not only protected the hand but also provided a better balance. The slim blades were sometimes single-edged, those were backswords that were also often used in Germany, but the blade was mostly two-edged and it could both cut and slash. The basket hilted broadsword was often used in combination with a dirk.
