Learn all about styling and maintenance of wigs
All wigs we sell are synthetic wigs made from 100% polychloride or 100% polyester. Just like real hair, synthetic hair can get tangled and frizzy, so it's necessary to do regular maintenance on your wigs to keep them looking good. Detangling synthetic hair
Things like friction and wind can cause your wig to get tangled. Just like with regular hair, you can brush or comb out these knots, but you need the right tools. Not all combs and brushes are suitable for synthetic hair.
A wide-tooth comb is preferred. The open, wide teeth can detangle the wig without breaking too many hairs, which a narrow-tooth comb will do more of. If you prefer using a brush, choose one with enough space between the bristles.
Brush the wig layer by layer and work from the end of a section towards the root.
Never brush or comb your wig while it's wet! This will damage the wig's fibers.
Washing synthetic hair
Before you wash your synthetic wig, brush it thoroughly and make sure there are no tangles in it.
The best cleaning product for synthetic wigs is a special shampoo for synthetic wigs. If you have a limited budget, a mild detergent is a good alternative.
Fill a basin with lukewarm water and add a tablespoon of shampoo or detergent. Gently lower the wig into the basin until it's completely submerged. Let the wig soak for about 10 minutes. Rinse with clear, cold water until the shampoo or detergent is completely rinsed out of the hair.
Squeeze out the excess water, but do NOT wring it out.
After that, you can let the wig soak in lukewarm water and fabric softener for a bit, but this is not necessary. Use a tablespoon of fabric softener and let the wig soak for only 2 to 3 minutes. Rinse the wig again with clear, cold water and squeeze out the excess water.
You can lay the wig on a clean towel to dry or place it on a narrow stand. Don't place it on a mannequin head while it's wet, as this can stretch out the wig cap.
Once the wig is dry, you can brush it again if needed. A curled or wavy wig should maintain its curls and waves after washing, but there are also ways to re-curl a synthetic wig if the wig loses some curl.
Defrizzing or straightening synthetic hair
The more often you wear and handle a wig, the greater the chance that the hair will frizz. However, it's not necessary to throw away a frizzy wig, as this problem can be solved.
Steam is a wonderful medium for synthetic wigs. Some people simply put a pan filled with water on the stove and hold their wig in the rising steam for a while. This is a good method if you're on a tight budget. Be careful with your hands and arms though, as steam can burn you. It's safer to place the wig on a wooden spoon or something similar instead of holding it with your hands.
A more advanced way to use steam on your wig is with a portable clothing steamer. Place your wig on a stand or mannequin head and divide the hair into sections, starting at the bottom layer. Take a section of hair and slowly drag the steamer over it. Watch your fingers when you reach the hair ends. You can do this multiple times per strand if the wig is very frizzy. If the wig isn't too wet from the steam, you can also gently comb through the strand with a wide-tooth comb.
Work through each layer of the wig with this method. After that, you can brush or comb the wig as explained earlier.
Steaming a synthetic wig may cause it to lose some curl, but this can be fixed afterward.
If you have a curled or wavy wig that you want to straighten, you can also use this method for that. You just need to go over each hair section more often until it's straight enough to your liking. Don't use a hair straightener on a synthetic wig! Heated hair styling tools are too hot for synthetic fibers and will melt the hair!
