In 1876 it was decided to prohibit wearing a katana in public. Suddenly, a millenia old tradition was brought to an end. Katanas, wakizashis and tantos were traditionally kept safe by taking off the grip and putting them in a bamboo scabbard. The scabbard often showed what type of weapon it was and by which smith it was forged.
After wearing a katana was prohibited, people started wearing the katana in this bamboo scabbard publicly. It could not be told apart from an average walking stick and could still be drawn in case of need.
