Product description

This spangenhelm is based on originals depicted on the Bayeux Tapestry. Nasal helmets like this were worn in Western Europe from the 9th century onward. On the Bayeux Tapestry, both Anglo-Saxon and Norman warriors are shown wearing this type of helmet. It was likely used up until the First Crusade. Around the 11th century, a new type of nasal helmet made from a single piece was developed. This design was stronger than the older spangenhelm. However, spangenhelms like this were easier to produce and could be repaired during campaigns. The helmet bowl consisted of several plates joined together with spangen.

The helmet is made of 2 mm thick steel. The steel bands and 3 mm thick nose guard are screwed onto the helmet. It comes with a leather liner and chin strap and is available in two sizes:

  • Size M: fits a maximum head circumference of 61 cm

  • Size L: fits a maximum head circumference of 64 cm

Both sizes weigh approximately 2.5 kg.
