15th century love token Oostende

This pewter badge is a replica of a 15th century original excavated in Oostende, Belgium. Love tokens, like hearts, were often worn on badges during the 15th century. A heart pierced by an arrow however was quite seldom. It symbolizes the pain of love: the heart is pierced, but it does not break. This crowned heart was a gift for lovers during the 15th century. The badge is made of pewter, which was an affordable material for all classes in society. The original badge is nowadays part of the Institute for the Archaeological Patrimonium
