A gorget and a bevor are two different pieces of armour that are both worn around the neck. A gorget protects the neck and throat, while a bevor protects the neck, throat and lower half of the face. Both the gorget and the bevor are small pieces of armour that are worn over a breastplate. Most breastplates or cuirass don't reach all the way up to the neck, because that would restrict movement too much. However, this would leave the throat and neck exposed and vulnerable. By wearing a collar or bevor over the breastplate, you can cover the throat and neck area without restricting your freedom of movement, because the neck and chest pieces can move independently of each other. Putting on a gorget or bevor can sometimes be a bit tricky, but we'll show you step by step how to do it.
How can I best put on my gorget and bevor?
Putting on a gorget
A neck collar has a relatively simple mechanism, but it can be tricky to put on by yourself, especially if you don't have a mirror handy.
Depending on the model, the neck collar can have a hinge on one shoulder and a belt on the other, or a belt on both shoulders.
With a neck collar that has a hinge, you can place the collar around your neck and close the open side. Make sure the front and back overlap a little. You can now close the belt and buckle on that side and the collar is secured.
If you have a neck collar with straps on both shoulders, the easiest way to put it on is to close one strap before you put it on. Then you can place the neck collar around your neck and close it on the other shoulder in the same way as a neck collar with a hinge.
Most gorgets have an additional set of straps on the shoulders. These are used to attach pauldrons to the gorget.
Putting on a bevor
Unlike the neck collar, the bevor doesn't go all the way around the neck. A bevor usually consists of a front piece that covers the throat and lower face with a longer belt attached to it. To put on the bevor, simply place it against your throat and face and close the belt at the back of your neck.
