In Greek mythology, there were many myths about the Amazons. Fierce female warriors who lived in their own land under the rule of an Amazon queen. A society where there was no place for men.

Nowadays there are many more varieties of Amazon warriors, although they are still all female. Famous characters from pop culture are based on this concept of amazing, independent female warriors, such as Xena and Wonder Woman.

For this blog, we came up with two Amazon-inspired looks.

Amazon Archer Look 1

For the first look, we chose a youthful Amazon, but no less fierce. She trains her skills in her Amazon homeland.

Dress

The white dress emphasizes the youthfulness of the Amazon. However, the hours she has spent training and developing her skills are evident in how dirty and worn her dress is.

Belt

Because there are so many different depictions of Amazons nowadays, almost all types of weapons or fighting styles can be associated with these female warriors. In the original Greek myths, they were often skilled archers. This is also the weapon we used in our image. To always have her arrows within reach, our Amazon wears her quiver at her belt. This belt needs to be able to support the weight of the quiver and arrows and is therefore wider and made of leather.

With archery, quivers can be worn both on the back and around the waist. This usually depends on the archer's preference.

Bow

Different types of bows were used in different cultures and time periods. The type of bow was also often based on the specific use of the bow. Composite bows originally came from the Central Asian steppe, where the bow was an important tool for nomadic hunter-gatherers to control herds and large areas of land. The composite bow is effective both for hunting and in combat, because it is very easy to use from a horse. Amazons were known as hunters, riders and warriors, making the composite bow a perfect weapon for an Amazon.

Archery glove

Drawing a bowstring requires considerable strength and can damage the skin of the hand and fingers. For this reason, archers in many cultures and throughout the ages have worn a leather glove on their "draw" hand. A right-handed archer draws the bowstring with his left hand and therefore wears the glove on his left hand. For left-handed archers, this works the other way around.

The second Amazon-inspired look is a more mature and sexy look.

Amazons have been depicted in different ways throughout history. In ancient Greece, they often wore the same clothing as male warriors, but at the same time, they were often depicted with one exposed breast. In later art styles, their looks varied from being dressed in thinner, more flowing versions of Greek warrior clothing to being naked. And in modern pop culture, Amazons are regularly dressed in sexy or revealing outfits. Opinions about these depictions vary from person to person, but we wanted to play into the sexy image of the Amazon a bit.

Hangeroc

The hangeroc is traditionally a Viking garment and is meant to be worn over a simple, long dress. As with many garments, there was some variation in the exact shape and construction, with some having closed sides, while others had (partially) open sides.

The version we used for our Amazon look has open sides that are fastened with a few straps. This creates a more sexy look when worn without an underdress.

Belt

In the first look, the quiver was worn at the belt, which is not the case in the second look. Still, a belt is a great addition to a look like this. Belts are a great way to break up a larger amount of fabric in a dress or tunic. It also ensures that a hangeroc without an underdress doesn't move too much and ultimately becomes a bit too sexy.

The green belt has multiple rings, making it very easy to hang equipment and such from the belt, if needed.
