Everything You Need to Know About LARP Weapons

LARP weapons are specially designed to be used safely during roleplaying combat. They typically consist of a sturdy fiberglass core, wrapped in thick foam rubber, and then covered with a latex layer, making them look like real swords, staves, or other weapons.

General rules for LARP weapons

Each event has specific rules for weapons. Always check with the organizers whether there are any different rules. A good rule of thumb is: when in doubt, ask or don't use it.

Important general points:

  • Weapons must not contain hard or sharp parts, except in the handle

  • Foam rubber must be firmly attached to the core

  • The handle must be firmly and securely fastened

  • The core must not stick out anywhere from the weapon

  • Weapons must not be too heavy and must not have too much whip (especially with longer weapons)

  • Thrusting movements are never allowed

  • Weapons that can absorb water must be waterproof

  • Weapons with chains or consisting of multiple loose parts are usually not allowed

Percussion weapons

Swords, axes, and other percussion weapons must not have hard surfaces or loose pieces.

  • Check the tip of a sword: it must not be held only by latex

  • Percussion weapons must not be used as thrusting weapons

  • Long weapons must not be more than 215 cm long, shorter single-handed weapons not longer than 150 cm

Staves

Staves, banner staves, and other staff-like weapons don't necessarily have to be made of latex, but:

  • They must not have sharp points or hooks

  • They must never be used to hit or block blows, unless specifically allowed

Thrusting weapons

  • Thrusting weapons such as spear points are usually not allowed for thrusting

  • Some events in the Netherlands allow thrusting spears, but the standard rule is: never thrust

Throwing weapons

  • Throwing weapons must not have a core or protruding points

  • They must be larger than an eye socket, so no one is at risk

  • Small or hard throwing weapons, such as "pancakes" that can hover or fly upwards, are prohibited

Bows and crossbows

  • Bows are often limited to a maximum of 30 pound draw weight

  • Shooting in darkness or within 7 meters of other players is prohibited

  • For some events, a bow test is required to prove you can shoot safely

Arrows

  • Homemade arrows must be checked for construction and damage

  • After each use, arrows must be checked for cracks or loose feathers

Armor

  • Clothing or items that are hit must be free of sharp points or hard protruding parts

  • No unfinished metal edges or pointed studs, to prevent damage to weapons and players

Shields

  • Shields must not have sharp edges or corners

  • Carrying straps and back must be smooth and rounded

  • Shields must not be used as a weapon or battering ram

  • They should be held at your body for protection

Summary

LARP weapons are designed for safe and realistic play, but always with emphasis on safety for yourself and others. Check the event rules beforehand, only use approved weapons, and keep in mind the maximum length, weight, and solidity. By following these guidelines, everyone can safely participate in battles, skirmishes, or combat scenarios during a LARP.
