If you're just starting out in the world of historical and fantasy costumes, it can be tricky to figure out how to put your outfit together. Plus, costs can add up quickly if you still need to buy everything, especially if you don't have any items to fall back on yet.
That's why we want to present three basic pirate options in this blog. While buying your first outfit is always a significant investment, we've made sure all these looks stay under €200, so costs stay manageable. We've deliberately chosen not to recommend specific shoes for these looks. Shoes can take a huge bite out of your budget, while they can often easily be replaced with a modern alternative. With a simple pair of boots from a thrift store or a budget shoe shop, you'll get by just fine, and that gives you the chance to save up for an investment in authentic shoes at a later time.
Most of the clothing items we've used in these looks are available in different colours. This means you can mix and match items from different outfits or choose a different colour that suits your taste.
Female Pirate Look 1
For the first female pirate look, we've gone for a black, off-shoulder blouse. This type of blouse works well in different looks, both historical and fantasy.
With a pirate costume for women, you can go two ways. You can keep it more feminine by using a skirt, or you can go for a tougher, more masculine look by using trousers. In this first outfit, we've chosen a red skirt.
Of course, just a blouse and skirt doesn't quite make a pirate outfit yet. To get the pirate feel into the outfit, we've worked with a few accessories.
To start with, we've added a belt to the outfit. This belt is relatively simple, but the double ring gives it a nice detail. To the belt, we've hung a sailor's spyglass in a pouch. We've also used the traditional tricorn pirate hat.
Look 2
The second pirate look starts with a blouse again. This blouse can, like the first one, be worn off-shoulder. The difference from the first blouse is that this one has longer sleeves with a puff at the top. Like the first blouse, this model is easy to incorporate into different looks.
For this second look, we've decided to go for the tougher side by adding trousers. These trousers have multiple button details and laces at the bottom of the trouser legs.
To dress up this outfit further and make it more pirate-like, we've decided to add a gilet. You often see these types of gilets used in pirate costumes.
In this outfit, we've only used one accessory, because we've used one more clothing item than in the first look.
This accessory is a brown belt with a large, decorated buckle. This belt is perfect for a pirate costume.
Look 3
The last look in this blog is a somewhat more luxurious version of a pirate outfit.
We've started with a blouse again. This blouse has a different neckline than the first two, with tie details on the chest.
We've paired this blouse with black trousers. It's a fairly simple model with a drawstring closure.
To create a completely different look, we've used a pirate jacket in this outfit. These types of jackets are often associated with the pirate captain.
Like in the second look, we've only used a belt as an accessory, since we've already used three clothing items.
This time it's a simple black belt.
Additional options
If you have a more generous budget, you can always supplement these looks with shoes or extra accessories.
