Importance of Body Protection
Participants in mock combat always run a risk of injury, even when following all safety regulations. Body protection reduces this risk, but cannot completely rule out fractures, bruises, or other injuries.
It is therefore essential to wear the right protective equipment and check that it meets the rules of the event or group you're participating in.
Minimum Body Protection
The minimum protection for a participant consists of:
A helmet with sufficient padding, for example a quilted inlay or a loose arming cap
Padded safety gloves or gauntlets with leather inner glove
A gambeson, gambeson or arming doublet
When armor is worn, there must always be a gambeson or other suitable padding underneath. This padding absorbs impact and prevents direct contact between the armor and the body.
Helmets
A helmet is a crucial part of protection and is considered battle-ready at a steel thickness of at least 2 mm.
Important points for a helmet:
Fastening under the chin with a strap equipped with a buckle
Sufficient padding under the helmet, for example a quilted inlay or arming cap
Leather inlays such as parachute inlays provide insufficient protection and are not considered suitable
A helmet must fit properly:
Too loose: can shift or fall off during combat
Too tight: can cause injury upon impact
The padding under the helmet reduces the impact of a blow, but cannot absorb all force on the head and neck. A helmet therefore does not prevent a hard blow from causing injury to the cervical spine or head.
Rules and Agreements
Specific rules may apply per group or event regarding which body protection is mandatory and which is permitted. Always check in advance:
What protection is required for your type of mock combat
Whether your equipment meets current safety standards
Whether there are additional agreements on the use of armor or padding
By preparing well and wearing the right protection, you reduce the risk of injury and can safely participate in mock combat.
