zwitserse-sallet-15e-eeuw-1-6-mm
Swiss sallet, 15th century, 1.6 mm

This sallet is a replica of a South German or Swiss example, made in the so-called Augsburg style and recognizable by its relatively short neck guard. The sallet developed in the first half of the 15th century from the kettle hat and gradually displaced the bascinet as the most worn helmet in Europe throughout that century - known by local names such as celata in Italy, Schaller in Germany and salade in France.

The helmet is made of 1.6 mm steel, with a protective neck edge and a distinctive ridge running over the top, the rim rolled all around. The rectangular eye slit, approximately 1 cm wide and 16 cm long with an extended lower lip, provides good vision and adequate ventilation. Inside is an adjustable, riveted leather helmet insert, with a pre-shaped, adjustable leather chin strap.

As was customary at the time, this sallet could be combined with a bevor: open for optimal vision and breathing room, or closed for extra protection of the lower face. This example is suitable for re-enactment, living history, exhibition and collectors.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0891/2892/7560/files/1716382200b_helm_schaller_einfach_mittelalter.jpg?v=1789408338
