duitse-sallet-nuremberg-1-6-mm
German sallet Nuremberg, 1.6 mm

This sallet is based on German examples from the 15th century, such as those seen in the Germanisches Nationalmuseum in Nuremberg. The sallet gradually displaced the bascinet in this century and, thanks to its spread from Italy to France, England and the Netherlands and eventually Germany, became one of the most worn helmets in Europe - known under local names such as celata in Italy, Schaller in Germany and salade in France.

The arming cap has a protective neck guard and a light ridge over the top, and is made from 1.6 mm steel. The visor is attached with steel rivets and leaves a viewing slot of 1.5 to 2 cm wide and 15 cm long when closed, with an extended lower lip for adequate vision and ventilation. Inside, the helmet is blued and fitted with a riveted leather insert; an adjustable leather chin strap with antique brass buckle completes the helmet.

Sallets were often worn together with a bevor in those days, which - open or closed - offered either more field of vision or more protection. This specimen is suitable for re-enactment, living history, exhibition and collectors.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0891/2892/7560/files/SPQR-H039_helm_deutscher_schaller_nuernberg_sallet.jpg?v=1789408296
