Vexillum spearhead, semi-sharp

This vexillum point is based on a Roman original from the 1st century AD and is now part of the collection of the Landesmuseum in Bonn. The vexillarii were the standard bearers of a military unit. This could be not only within the legion but also in cavalry and auxiliary units. Just like the regimental flags of early modern Western armies, the vexillum was a valuable symbol of the unit it represented and was carefully defended in battle. It is made of 9260 carbon steel.

The vexillum was the most important standard of certain types of units, especially the cavalry. Nevertheless, it was considered less important than the aquila (the eagle), which symbolized the entire legion. It is possible that the vexillum represented a subdivision of a legion, but the exact meaning of this is not entirely clear from the surviving sources.
