What requirements are placed on a helmet for mock combat?

Introduction

The helmet is the most important protective tool during mock battles. It protects the head against blows and must therefore meet clear safety requirements.

Purpose and relevance of this article

  • Provide insight into safe helmet specifications

  • Prevent unsuitable or dangerous helmets

  • Support responsible use in LARP and reenactment

Historical & functional context

A suitable helmet must:

  • Be made of at least 2 millimeters thick steel

  • Be equipped with a chin strap with buckle

  • Have enough padding via a padded helmet inlay or arming cap

A simple leather "parachute"-inlay offers insufficient protection. The helmet must fit correctly: not too tight and not too loose.

Practical tips

  • Always combine a helmet with a good arming cap or arming cap

  • Check the helmet inlay and adjust it to your size.

  • Always fasten the chin strap of your helmet while wearing it

  • Test the fit before intensive use

  • Do not use helmets with dents and damages

Safety in mock combat starts with the user. No equipment is safe without correct use and maintenance.
