What's the best method to make synthetic hair less shiny?
Synthetic wigs can be a bit too glossy to look realistic. There are a few different ways to make synthetic hair less shiny for a more realistic effect.
Dry Shampoo
One of the simplest ways to make a wig less glossy is by using dry shampoo. Dry shampoo is a spray containing a powdery substance designed to remove oil from human hair. This powdery substance is also quite effective at removing shine from synthetic hair. One downside is that dry shampoo can also dull the colour of the wig. The powder in the spray can leave a white layer on the hair, but this can be reduced by rubbing in the dry shampoo. How much trouble you have with this varies greatly by brand and even type of dry shampoo. So you might need to experiment a bit to find the best option for you.
You can simply spray the dry shampoo evenly over your wig and comb through gently. Depending on how glossy your wig is, you may need to work through the wig layer by layer.
Baby Powder
Baby powder works essentially the same as dry shampoo, you just need to apply it differently. You can dab the baby powder onto the wig with your hands or with a powder brush. Just like with dry shampoo, you can apply it only to the top layer, or work it through the different layers of the wig.
Don't use other types of powder, as these can leave a white layer on your wig.
Fabric Softener
Another popular method to remove shine from synthetic hair is using fabric softener. Add a tablespoon of fabric softener to a bucket of lukewarm water. Let the wig soak for 2 to 3 minutes. Rinse the wig with clear, cold water and squeeze out the excess water. Let the wig dry and it should be less glossy than before.
