This outfit is inspired by the medieval plague doctor. Here we've given it our own twist.

Plague doctor mask

Plague doctors wore special clothing that was designed to protect them against the disease. The beak-shaped nose of their mask was filled with strongly scented substances such as herbs, flowers or vinegar. People believed at the time that the plague was spread by bad air, so these scents were used to purify the air and protect the doctor.

Clothing

Their long robe covered the entire body. The colours red and white were in some cases associated with medieval physicians and surgeons. Red was often associated with blood and the human body, while white was associated with purity and cleanliness. However, there were no strict uniforms or standard clothing for these professions.

The overgown in this composition is unfortunately no longer made. We offer several alternatives.

Belt

A belt is an essential part of the outfit, as the doctor could hang pouches with medicines and other medical tools from it.

Bottle

Plague doctors usually prescribed herbal preparations as medicines, but the success of these treatments was limited. They also used other methods, such as bloodletting, the administration of laxatives and the use of prayers and religious rituals. Leeches were sometimes also used to draw "bad blood" from the body, as people believed this could cure the disease.

Plague staff

The plague doctor used a stick or staff to examine patients without making direct contact. People believed that the disease was spread by physical contact. The doctor could also use it to keep people at a distance.

Fur collar

The fur collar provides an extra dramatic effect.

Boots

Because as much of the body as possible had to be covered, we chose a pair of matching high boots.

Gloves

Plague doctors usually wore leather gloves. These leather gloves were designed to protect their hands against direct contact with body fluids or other potentially infectious materials and to cover any wounds or cuts.
