This replica sword is a stunning piece for any sword collection. It is based on a sword discovered in a ship burial near Uppsala, Sweden. Due to the richness of its decoration, it almost certainly belonged to a chieftain, noble, or elite warrior. The Vendel Period took place between the Migration Period and the Viking Age. Several similarly lavishly decorated swords have been found from this era.
The stylized rings on the upper cross-guard may represent miniature versions of Germanic oath rings. Agreements based on oath-bound reciprocity played a central role in Germanic society, and these rings may symbolize the oath-bound relationship between a chieftain and his tribe. The grip of this spatha is crafted in the Germanic animal style, Styles II/B and II/C.
This replica is made from 9260 carbon steel and features a broad fuller. The hilt is made from tinned brass, with the entire hilt richly decorated in the Vendel style. The pommel is cloisonné with red enamel. The sword comes with a brown leather scabbard with brass fittings.
