Guidelines for Using Projectiles During Battles and Scenarios
Within LARP and historical re-enactment, arrows and other projectiles are used to realistically simulate long-range combat. Although these arrows are specially designed to minimize the risk of injury, they remain physical projectiles that are fired with force. Correct usage, clear agreements, and appropriate protection are therefore essential.
This knowledge base article describes the conditions under which LARP and re-enactment arrows can be responsibly used and what participants need to keep in mind.
What are LARP and re-enactment arrows?
LARP and re-enactment arrows are projectiles specially adapted for use in staged combat. They differ fundamentally from historical or sport arrows.
Key characteristics of these arrows are:
The tip is fitted with a broad, dampening impact head
The shaft is flexible enough to absorb energy
The arrow is intended solely for targets at distance, not for close combat
Despite these modifications, arrows remain unpredictable in flight and impact, especially during group combat or changing conditions.
Responsible Use During Battles
The use of arrows is permitted exclusively within scenarios or battles where this has been explicitly approved by the organizers. The use of projectiles requires discipline from both archers and targets.
Archers must:
Only shoot at authorized targets
Never fire at close range
Account for the chaos on the battlefield
Arrows are meant to simulate tactical pressure, not to physically eliminate opponents.
Protecting Participants
During scenarios where projectiles are used, wearing appropriate protective gear is mandatory.
Helmets with visors:
Must be worn by participants in the line of fire
The visor must be closed at the moment arrows are fired
It's important to realize that:
Visors only provide limited protection
Openings, gaps, and edges remain vulnerable areas
For this reason, additional situational awareness is necessary.
Posture and Behavior Under Arrow Fire
When projectiles are deployed, the responsibility lies not only with the archer but also with those under fire.
Recommended behavior:
Keep your head down when arrows are being fired
Use a shield as extra protection, preferably held above your head
Avoid sudden movements toward archers
Arrows can ricochet, change direction, or come in unexpectedly low. Being aware of your posture significantly reduces risks.
Limitations of Protective Equipment
No protective equipment makes a participant completely immune to impact.
Helmets, visors, and shields:
Reduce risk but do not eliminate it
Don't protect against every angle of impact
Can fail with improper use or damage
Wearing protective gear does not relieve participants of the duty to remain alert and act responsibly.
Inspection of Arrows and Equipment
Before each use, arrows must be inspected for:
Damaged or loose impact heads
Cracks in the shaft
Irregularities that affect flight
Damaged arrows must not be reused. A defective projectile poses a risk to everyone on the field, regardless of protective equipment.
Responsibility and Agreements
The use of LARP and re-enactment arrows always occurs within the rules and instructions of the organizing party. These rules are definitive and may vary from event to event.
Responsibility lies with:
The organizers for providing clear guidelines
The archer for correct usage
The participant for appropriate behavior and equipment
By participating in an event, it is assumed that these guidelines are known and will be followed.
