How do I best maintain my chainmail shirts?
Depending on the type of steel, a chainmail shirt requires less or more maintenance. Galvanized or stainless steel requires much less maintenance than plain steel, but plain steel is the most authentic material to use.
Degreasing
The first step in maintaining chainmail shirts is degreasing the rings. You can wipe away a lot of the grease with a soft cloth, but not all of it. To remove the remaining grease, you can use turpentine. Let the chainmail shirt dry thoroughly.
Oiling
If you plan to wear it right away, you can leave the chainmail shirt as is. If you want to store the chainmail shirt, you should oil it before putting it away. You can use mineral or vegetable oil or WD-40 for this.
A plain steel chainmail shirt must be degreased before each use and oiled after each use to prevent rust.
