The pourpoint was originally conceived as a military garment, which cuts at the waist to prepare the body for the breastplate armour, which rested between the ribs and the pelvis. This ensured that the weight of the armour was shifted from the shoulders to the hips.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eInstead of bearing the weight of their armour on their shoulders, late medieval knights chose to distribute the weight of their armour across their body.
