This type of bascinet is also called the dog-snout or pig-snout bascinet. The dog-snout bascinet offered not only protection; the pointed shape of the visor ensured that blows to the face were deflected. Moreover, it improved ventilation, because the larger surface could contain more holes through which air flowed. \u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eThis bascinet is a replica of a pig-snout bascinet presumably made between 1360 and 1390. Today it forms part, together with the matching armour, of the collection of Churburgh Castle. Helmets of this type were used throughout Europe between the second half of the 14th century and the first half of the 15th century. They were used during the Hundred Years' War between England and France and in the many wars that raged around this time in northern and central Italy. The pig-snout of this helmet is very efficient, as it deflects blows to the face towards the sides.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eThis battle-ready model is made of 2mm steel and equipped with a textile helmet insert. The visor can be removed with pins, turning the helmet into an open bascinet that offers optimal field of vision. The pig-snout, like the original, is equipped with air holes on one side. It is decorated with brass strips. This bascinet is provided at the lower edge with vervelles to which a mail collar, a camail, can be attached.
