Viking swords were derived from the German types of spathae, swords from the Iron Age. They were quite long, had a solid protection and a strong blade. It is presumed he original of this Viking sword had a double cutting edge. Presumably it was derived from the Celtic and Roman cavalry swords. The sword would not only have served as a sword for battle, but also to directly reveal the status of the wearer. When the Roman Empire collapsed the Germanic and Frankish aristocracy adopted the designs of the Iron Age sword the spatha. Swords were decorated less and the cross-guard became wider. However the pommel continued to be decorated, swords around this period were not made for balance and that offered the artist the possibility to apply various decorations on the pommel.

This 10th century Viking sword is a Petersen type S, a development of type D. Swords like this are often found in North- and East Europe.

This sword has a length of 88 cm with a blade of 71 cm and a cross-guard of 9 cm. It weighs about 1,5 kg. The blade has a Rockwell hardness of 44-48 HRC.

This sword is made by Jiri Krondak from Prague. During the last 20 years, this line of swords proved themselves on the re-enactment fields. They are continually perfectionised to a reliable and inexpensive type of re-enactment swords.

This sword is a Petersen type S.
