The sax, seax or scramaseax is a large knife that was worn by European men in the 5th until the 11th century. Typical for the seax is that it has a single-edged blade and that it is worn horizontally, with the sharp edge upwards. Seaxes like this were used around 550 AD by the Saxons and the Franks.
