The Tabula Peutingeriana is a copy of a 3rd-4th century Roman travel map. The map depicts the areas between Great Britain, Spain and North Africa. The map has several parts that all depict a part of Europe. The map is not a natural representative of the actual area: it is a schematic depiction of the road network and the stopping places in the Roman Empire. The largest part of the map also shows the distances between the stopping places, partly in Roman miles (milia passuum) and for the Gaulish part in leugae (approx. 1,5 Roman miles). Without doubt this is the result of the map having several sources. At the time it was made, there were already many itineraria in circulation: travel routes in list form. A great collection was the Itinerarium Antonini, that names at least 3500 stopping places with their distances. The original of the Tabula Peutingeriana, which has unfortunately not been preserved, was still abridged wth new roads and places until approx. 400 AD.
This map is made in a paper book scroll. The book scroll is an exact replica of the orginal Tabula Peutingeriana. It is 400 cm long. In scroll form, it measures 4 x 20 cm.
