This aryballos is a replica of a 3rd century original. Similar aryballoi were used between the 1st and 3rd centuries AD throughout the Roman empire to store oil in. This oil was used in gymnasia and bath houses for massages. The oils absorbed body dirt and were thereafter scraped from the body with a strigilis.
This aryballos is hand blown from blue glass. It is 7 x 9 cm large.
