Knucklebones like this were used while playing the game tali (Latin) or astragalus (Greek) and have been excavated all over the classical world. Originally these dice were made of sheep`s knucklebones. This was offal but in this way it could be re-used. The more expensive knucklebones were made of bronze or brass. The game was played with five knucklebones.

Especially Caesar Augustus was known for being a fanatic knucklebone player. This gambling game was played until the Middle Ages by men, women and children.

This astragalus is delivered per piece and is made of bone. It measures 3 x 2 cm.
