A pavise is a large shield that was mainly used by Mediterranean European people. It covered the whole body and therefore it was often used by crossbowmen that could reload their bow while using the shield as a shelter. Later on a smaller version of the pavise was also made that was used in duels. Pavises were mainly used in late medieval sieges. Pavises were often completely painted, not only with shields of arms but mainly with religious scenes to be protected from enemies.
This pavise is painted with heraldic scenes. Its length is 120 cm and its width is 55 cm.
