The story of Esther is set during the reign of the Persian king Xerxes I, he continued the war with Greece started by his predecessor. However, in 180 BC his navy was defeated at the Battle of Salamis, this deprived Xerxes of the possibility for large scaled military actions in the area and turned out to be the beginning of the downfall of the Persian Empire. The authorship of the book Esther is unknown. Esther is the only book of the Tanach that is not represented in the Dead Sea Scrolls.
This papyrus scroll is made of the Cyperaceae from the Nile delta. It is traditionally handmade.
