This coin is a replica of originals that were minted during the reign of King John of England.
King John reigned between 1199 and 1216. Thanks to his predecessor Richard I he inherited a bankrupted country. Nevertheless he continued the wars in France. Thanks to the high taxes and the failed campaigns in France, the English noblemen revolted against him. They forced him to sign the first Constitution, the Magna Carta, in June 1215. This was just a temporary peace, but the conflict later continued.
The English noblemen plotted with the Scottish King Alexander II to help King Phillip of France to claim the English throne. King John, however, died during this plot and Phillip was sent back to France.
This coin is made of leadless pewter.
