The galea was the Roman helmet from the 4thcentury BC to the 3th century AD. The design varied per period and unit. The Roman helmets were influenced by the Etruscans, the Greeks and the Gauls. The Gauls have probably introduced the chainmail in Rome as well. In 1975 galeae were subdivided in four types by H. Russell Robinson and since then these types are often used to classify a helmet.

The so-called mask helmets were used by the Roman cavalries around the 1stcentury AD. This helmet is a replica of an original found in Hungary and is nowadays being exhibited in New York. The mask and the decorations are made of brass. The helmet can be fastened with a leather strap and the mask is clothed with leather for wearing comfort and it can be opened. The helmet is suitable for a head circumference up to 62 cm.
