In the thirteenth century people aimed after producing a combined slashing and thrusting weapon and the battle axe could still be recognised in the halberd. In the fourteenth century a hook was placed at the back side to pull enemy horsemen from their horse. As a result infantrymen suddenly became a serious enemy of the cavalry. Descriptions tell us that both a man and his horse could be cleft with just one blow of the halberd. Experienced infantrymen could drive their halberd through a suit of armour with one blow.
