The flail was presumably developed from the agricultural flail during the crusades. Because the steel ball was fastened to a chain it could be well used against enemies with a shield.

This type of flail was mainly used from the 15th century on in Germany.
This flail has two balls to enlarge its impact. Its length is 60 cm with a chain of 25 cm. The balls weigh 0,35 kg.
