Henry VIII became king of England in 1509. Henry revised the papal power over England and announced himself the head of the Church of England. Henry was the first English king with a permanent charm. He also founded the Royal Armouries. As a result England has had a military advantage over other European countries during later periods.
Elizabeth I was the second daughter of Henry. She became queen in 1558. The protestant Queen Elizabeth imprisoned her catholic niece Mary Queen of Scots and executed her. After years of friction between Catholic Europe and protestant England king Philip II of Spain attacked England in 1558 with an enormous Armada. However, his Armada was defeated by the British Navy.
