The cataphract was the first type heavy cavalry, where both the equestrian and the horse were almost completely covered in an iron or bronze lamellar armour. The cataphract originates from the Persian Empire, but around the 4th century AD they served in large numbers as auxiliae in the Roman legions. After the fall of Rome they persisted for centuries as the heavy cavalry of the Byzantine Empire.
This helmet is made after an original from the 8th century AD found in Turkey.
The helmet has a detachable nose piece and a lamellar armour to protect the neck and part of the shoulders.
