Sabres like this occurred in large numbers in the American navy. The gold-coloured basket shows that sabres like this were used by officers. The sabre is an evolution of the European backsword, a straight, single-edged sword with a basket. It is often single-edged with a slightly curved blade and a quite large knuckle-guard. Cavalry sabres however were straight and two-edged. Originally a 10 th century Hungarian cavalry weapon the sabre had its highlight during the 19th century in the Napoleontic Wars and the American Civil War.

This sabre is delivered including a scabbard. Its length is 95 cm and it has a blade of 71 cm that is decorated with etching. The basket and the leather scabbard are partly made of brass.
